What is geisha coffee? Is it something related to Japan? Actually it has no connection with Japanese traditional entertainers geisha. Geisha/Gesha is a particular coffee varietals, like bourbon, pacamara, typica etc. It is an original variety that was discovered in the 1930s in the Southwestern town of Gesha, Ethiopia.
Geisha made its spotlight ‘arrival’ to the world in 2004 as the varietal that took the prize at the Best Of Panama (BOP) competition. Daniel Peterson of Hacienda La Esmeralda presented them to the international panel and it astonished coffee professionals and was pronounced “God in a cup”。 Since then, the price of Geisha coffee continued to rise up every year.
